Contemporary Celtic music has become one of my favorite genres. On The Golden Land, Ceredwen celebrates  the epic sweep of early Celtic history with a soul-stirring album. Set to rousing tribal beats, the silken voice of Renee Gray sings of battles won and lost and of heroes of the past still celebrated around hearth fires.

Gray’s partner Andrew Fryer contributes much of the music, his lush keyboards and percussion serving as the perfect accompaniment to Gray’s remarkably pure yet powerful voice. I really enjoyed the extensive liner notes, which feature a synopsis of the legend behind each track, as well as the lyrics in Gaelic and English. Favorite tracks include “Beltain,” which celebrates the lighting of the Beltane fires to welcome back the sun god Bel. Gray’s layered voice soars above earthy dance beats, creating a high-energy song that will bring listeners to their feet. For contemporary Celtic music at its most spellbinding. Take a trip to The Golden Land.
